COOK ISLANDS....A perfect island chain(2-14-01)
Plenty of pregnant cats, live traditional music everywhere, beautiful crystal clear lagoons, loud crowing roosters, friendly islanders, excellent transportation, abundance of papaya’s and mango’s, a tiny cinema playing CASTAWAYS (how ironic as it was filmed locally), manicured lawns, amazing and used recycling system, delicious exotic fruits juice combinations, daily tropic rain, strong US dollar, lovely decorated cemeteries, entrée=appetizer, cold but refreshing showers, good library, famous black cultured pearls, many older tourist, cross island hikes.
Cook Islands (continued) I decided to leave “Raro” after 15 wonderful days and head to Fiji for some surf and sun. Raro had been hit by the tail of 2 cyclones this week and was very rainy. My Irish luck was not with me as I found out at the Rarotonga Airport that Fiji was in the throws of a full blown cyclone thus I was redirected to Auckland, New Zealand. My last week in Raro consisted of completing my advance dive course, kayaking, snorkeling, biking around the island several times (25 miles) doing the cross-island track, swimming in water falls, etc. Plus, I have met some fabulous people in the hostel (Aremango Hostel). Rarotonga is the most efficient, safe and peaceful island that I have ever been on.
I would highly recommend 1 to 2 weeks here, longer if you want to do the outer islands. Hopefully next time I write I will be in Fiji.
