TAHITI...... A land of pristine beaches (6-01-01)

I arrived in Tahiti in the middle of the night and decided to sleep in an airport chair..... yet a familiar position for me lately. I jumped on the bus with my 50 lb. Backpack and off I went to the Moorea ferry. It was a luxurious 30-minute ride to the heart shaped island of Moorea.

I checked into my hostel (Chez Nelson), which was right on the beach and headed to the aqua-blue ocean for a swim. The warm rays of the sun quickly replenished my faded brown body. During my time I SCUBA dove with 80 plus sharks and saw several stunning sea turtles floating around. I also did a tourist shark and stingray tour which was excellent. I had 5 stingrays all over my body; I even managed to kiss one. Most of the time I hung out with my Italian roommate and an Aussie couple on the beach talking about how blessed we were to make it to paradise.

The US dollar was strong even with the expensive cost of food, etc. I stuck to my budget and was happily surprised to have only spent $280 for the week. The Tahitian Francs (CFP) were the most beautiful banknotes that I have seen in the Pacific, the men weren’t too bad either.

Moorea is known for its ragged mountains and lush green valleys…..it was absolutely breathtaking! Alas, my last day I spent back in the traffic congested capital of Papeete, Tahiti. I tried to absorb the last bit of the sun-drenched islands before I traveled to the remote destination of Easter Island.
