| FIJI....Land of romantic getaways(3-01-01) I have been living on a beautiful island (Nacula) for nearly 3 weeks. I flew into Nadi (3rd largest city) in the a.m. after my short and unexpected (but pleasant) stay in Auckland, New Zealand. I met up with 2 English blokes at the airport and become instant friends. We stayed at the frequently visited Sunseeker hostel, which was the closest to town and quickly booked a flight out to the Yasawa Islands. Nadi was a busy, extremely hot, tourist hyped city, with was a shock coming from tranquil Rarotonga. The next day we boarded the Turtle Island seaplane and flew (45 minutes) to the stunning Yasawa Islands. The Lonely Planet Travel book says “The Yasawas’ sun-drenched white-sand beaches, spectacular crystal-clear lagoons and rugged volcanic landscapes make them one of Fiji main tourist destinations”. The description was most accurate except we were blessed with very few tourist. All I can say was the Yasawa Islands were perfect! No banks, no postal service, no stores and very limited electricity via a generator which is course meant no e-mail….so that’s why I haven’t been in touch. On Nacula Island, I stayed at the Nabua Lodge (which I highly recommend). I lived in a bure (thacked hut) dorm style with 3 meals a day included for approx. $18 US a day. I snorkeled in the Blue Lagoon (where the movie was filmed), Honeymoon Island and in the underwater caves. I was also fortunate to do a hand full of SCUBA dives and saw some of the most spectacular and colorful hard coral formations. Luckily, I took part in several LOVO’s, which is a traditional feast cooked in a pit with palm leaves. I also enjoyed my share of Kava (a mild narcotic drink that looks and tastes like muddy water) which is used for ceremonial purposes. I was surrounded by 9 wonderful travelers during my stay on the island, most were couples as the islands are dripping with romance. “After breakfast”, our favorite saying, we would snorkel, fish, read each others books or just lay around. In the afternoon, after our usual rice and sausage meal, a customary nap or a swim was in order followed by a volleyball game, a breath taking sunset, a delicious meal and an occasional game of cards. Lanterns were given out as everyone walked under the sparkling stars to sleep in their mosquito netted wooden beds…bed time was usually 9:30 p.m., we all seem to be on solar time. | |
