| Australia....the land of the Olympics (5-11-01) I spent a quick two and a half weeks gallivanting in the land down-under, flying first into friendly and charming Brisbane and then to the famed and picturesque Sydney. In Brisbane, I stayed with a good friend, Claire, whom I met in Palau and her adorable and affectionate cat, Charlie. We went to a gangster costume party, sponsored by her running club, and had a blast (no pun intended). I met some of the most outrageous, outspoken fun-filled people. We drank, ate, toured the city via a private bus and ended up at our mystery designated location, a horse race track, what an unforgettable evening. I was fortunate to bush walk in the Tamborine National Park, toured a replica of the Capital Cook ship, the Endeavour, gambled in the Treasury Casino, wandered through the National Museum and Art Gallery, cruised on the City Cat and the Kitty Cat (water ferries) and sat on "Breaka" Beach, which is a man made beach smack dab I the middle of Brisbane. Brisbane was the best!!!! Onto Sydney to see and stay with Anna, a gal I met 12 years ago in Hawaii. We stayed one night at StarCity, an elaborate, 5 Star Hotel and Casino. We roamed the city for 2 nonstop days. Sydney definitely has a nautical mood that is surrounded by a magnificent harbour and an oasis of sculptured gardens and unbelievable fountains. I ended up taking the bus/train into the city daily since there was so much to do. I strolled through the quaint and historical streets of The Rock area, lounged in the tranquil green haven of Hyde Park and soaked up the atmosphere and tasted the delicious sweets along Darling Harbour. One of the highlights of Sydney was the heart-thumping but sensational BridgeClimb up the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Amazing panoramic views; a once in a life time experience. I also reconnected with some friends whom I met in Fiji several months ago, we had a mini-reunion. Now I am back in peaceful New Zealand for a few days before I head West to the Surfing capital of the world, Tahiti. Cowabunga, dudes! | |
