NEW ZEALAND....My home away from home (4-11-01)

It was back to civilization with a wide range of choices, everything from bread to tours. The environment was a diverse change from the multitude of blues water hues of the Pacific Islands to the indescribable green hues of the New Zealand forest and cities. And the temperature change of 30 degrees was also a welcome relief.

Most of my time was spent in Auckland with my friend Christine and her son, Nick. I was fortunate to stay in her lovely home.... bathe with hot water and do laundry (a backpackers dream), not to mention it was a quick and easy bus ride into the hustle and bustle of trendy Auckland. Oh, so many stores, Internet places and coffee shops.... yes, my friends Starbucks is thriving in New Zealand.

I also spent a large chunk of my time in tranquil Northland with my good friend Justine and her children (Taire & Molly). I toured around Northland all the way to the tiptop of New Zealand to Cape Reigna. I sailed and swam with the dolphins, ferried to surrounding quaint towns, hiked volcanic mountains and lovely beach trails, snorkeled off of shell beaches, explored glow worms caves, toured historical Maori sites and even sand boarded down giant sand dunes.... it was absolutely wonderful!

I bused from Auckland through a dreamland of countless gazing sheep, luscious rolling hills with gushing streams and rivers to "smelly" Rotorua. Rotorua is known for its natural thermal reserves, wonderland of geysers, pastel terraces and bubbling mud baths. I spent my days laying in the hot springs and sampling the local kiwi wines as it rained relentlessly.

After my travels through Kiwi Land, I can't help marvel over the beauty that surrounds New Zealand. I am off to Australia tomorrow for a few weeks and then will return for one more week to New Zealand before crossing the International Date Line once again bound for my next adventure.... Tahiti.
